Koh Samui, Thailand

Koh Samui ("ko sa moo ee"), Thailand

Ko Samui is the third-largest island in Thailand. Its sugar sand beach makes it a popular Gulf of Thailand destination, although it is not lush, or at least not the areas we saw.

It was an absolutely beautiful island, very mountainous, or at least high hills.

Our day was spent on a ship tour on a four wheel drive vehicle. The doors wouldn't say closed and everything was wired shut. Our guide was just OK, but we had a full and fun day. I didn't take any pictures from the vehicle because we were hanging on for dear life and bouncing around so they wouldn't have turned out anyway. It was a great drive around the whole island and very beautiful.

Our day was elephants, monkeys, ox cart, cooking, lunch and beach.

Elephants, our friends Tom and Sandy, our elephant ride, driving the elephant

We saw a demonstration of the monkeys harvesting coconuts. The monkeys can each pick 500 to 700 coconuts a day on the plantation. They do it by spinning the coconut until it falls off. I sure was glad we had seen the monkeys in the wild (and I do mean wild!) This seems so fake after that, although it was fun to see them pick the coconuts.

Working the rice fields:

Cooking demo of Thai Papaya Salad:

Riding the OX cart was very scary on that front seat! It was very rocky going over the ruts and up and down little hills. It was hard not to slide off.

Then a beautiful lunch at a beach resort:

And a rubber plantation visit.

The last stop was at a beautiful beach for a swim. It was heavenly because we were so hot! I didn't take any pics there for some reason, but it was really nice.

Jeanne, I had the same problem, only on the elephant. I thought for sure I was going to fall off when it was going downhill. It was a close call.
