Rome, Day 2

We dragged ourselves out of bed at 7:15 AM and headed for the Vatican by Subway and then walked the rest of the way.
We arrived at 8:30 and entered St Peter’s Basilica. It was almost empty which was a real treat. We explored in there for an hour.
Jeff spent time studying the Sculpture entitled The Pietá, his all time favorite.

Soon it was time to approach the Swiss Guards for entrance into our tour of the Scavi Excavations under St Peter’s.
This is an outstanding tour and I highly recommend it if you can get a ticket, but it needs to be done way in advance.

We hung around the area for an hour or two although by then it was crowded.

Then we headed back to the ship by train. We were still dragging from the night and day before.
We joined Roscoe, Elaine, Max and Ann in the Commodore Club for sail away and shared our various experiences of the last two days. Sunset was beautiful even thought it had started to rain. Roscoe even brought his little boom box and played Italian Opera. We had a lot of fun. It is really hard to believe that this was one of our last sail aways.
